Good News for International Travelers: Air India Slashes Fuel Surcharge; Flight Tickets Likely to Get Cheaper
New Delhi: In a major relief for globetrotters, international air travel is set to become more affordable. Following a recent slump in global crude oil prices, India’s national carrier, Air India, has slashed its fuel surcharge on international routes effective July 1st.
This move is expected to directly benefit passengers traveling to popular destinations across Europe, the United Kingdom (UK), North America, and Australia, as overall ticket prices are anticipated to drop significantly in the coming days.
Crude Oil Drop Drives the Decision
Global crude oil prices had witnessed a sharp surge following the outbreak of conflicts in the Middle East. However, a positive turn in the global market saw crude oil prices tumbling below $70 per barrel on June 30th. Capitalizing on this relief in operational costs, Air India promptly decided to roll back a portion of its fuel surcharge. According to airline sources, the government mandates airlines to pass on the benefits of reduced fuel costs to consumers. Consequently, a noticeable dip in international airfares is on the horizon. For instance, sources note that even a modest 10% reduction on a ₹100,000 ticket would translate into a direct saving of ₹10,000 for passengers.
📊 International Fuel Surcharge Revision
Destination / Route Old Surcharge / New Surcharge / Total Price Drop (%)
Europe & United Kingdom (UK) / $205 / $125 / 38%
North America & Australia / $280 / $200 / 28.5%
How Other Indian Carriers Are Responding
- IndiGo: While IndiGo has not yet released an official statement, industry experts believe the budget carrier will likely revise its international fares soon to comply with government directives on passing fuel cost benefits to travelers.
- SpiceJet: On the other hand, SpiceJet clarified that it will not be cutting any surcharges. The airline stated that it had not raised its fuel surcharges during the Middle East crisis, meaning the question of a reduction does not arise.
- Domestic Travel: Interestingly, while Domestic Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) prices were also slashed on July 1st, experts indicate that domestic flyers might not see an immediate drop in domestic ticket prices.
Air India Express Resumes Middle East Operations
In another boost for international travelers, Air India Express has fully restored its services to key Middle East destinations, including Salalah (Oman) and Kuwait.
The phase-wise rollout of these flights is scheduled as follows:
- Kozhikode – Salalah: Bi-weekly flights commenced on July 2.
- Kozhikode – Kuwait: Services resuming on July 3.
- Bengaluru – Kuwait: Services resuming on July 4.
This restoration of routes is expected to bring immense convenience to the large Indian diaspora working and traveling between India and the Gulf region.
