Beyond Grief: Family Donates Brain-Dead Man’s Organs; Police Create Green Corridor from Bagalkot to Belagavi
BAGALKOT/BELAGAVI: In a heart-wrenching yet inspiring act of humanity, the family of a 55-year-old brain-dead man has come forward to donate his organs, potentially saving multiple lives. To facilitate the complex organ retrieval process, the Bagalkot and Belagavi district police swiftly coordinated a seamless ‘Green Corridor’ with zero traffic, ensuring the patient was safely shifted from Bagalkot to Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC) in Belagavi in record time.

The patient, identified as Dundappa (55), met with a tragic accident recently at the Dharwad Railway Station. He had accidentally fallen while attempting to board a train, sustaining severe head injuries.
He was initially rushed to the SDM Hospital in Dharwad for primary treatment. As his condition deteriorated, he was subsequently shifted to the Kumareshwar Hospital in Bagalkot for advanced medical care. Despite the best efforts of the medical team, Dundappa failed to respond to the treatment, and doctors eventually declared him brain-dead.
Amidst the profound grief of losing their loved one, Dundappa’s family demonstrated immense courage and empathy by consenting to donate his organs to give a lease of life to needy patients. Following the family’s noble decision, it was determined that the organ harvesting procedure would be conducted at the state-of-the-art facilities at JNMC in Belagavi. Recognizing the extreme time-sensitivity of the situation, the Superintendents of Police (SPs) of both Bagalkot and Belagavi districts immediately swung into action.

The police departments of both districts jointly mapped out a ‘Zero Traffic’ green corridor along the highway. Thanks to the impeccable coordination between the hospital authorities, the SPs, and the entire police force on the ground, the ambulance managed to transport the patient across districts with maximum safety and within the shortest possible time.
Speaking on the development, Dr. Nagaraj stated that the patient was successfully stabilized, with his heart rate and blood pressure brought to normal levels before being shifted. The medical fraternity has expressed its profound gratitude to the police department for their swift action and flawless execution of the green corridor, which plays a crucial role in saving lives through organ donation.
